SECC grade sheets can be used for LCD back-plates. Because there has been a trend for cold-rolled strips toward thinner, therefore how to prevent the occurrences of edge waves during cold rolling is one of the major issues of manufacturing cold-rolled thin strips. This paper discusses the phenomenon of the edge waves of SECC thin strips in the single-stand 4HI skin-pass mill of continuous annealing line. We found that the anti-crossbow roll has great influence on the occurrences of edge waves, and an examination of the influence was made. Finally, it was discovered that the main cause of the edge waves was coarse grains in strip edges, which will result in uneven deformations during rolling. The mechanism and how to reduce coarse grains of strips will also be discussed. Our results indicates that, on improving the edge waves of cold-rolled thin strips, localized coarse grains in the strip edges have greater effect than other cold rolling factors. And anti-crossbow roll also contributes to the severity of edge waves for the SECC thin strips with coarse grains in its edges.
