Category - General Novel

Pinholes in continuously cast high carbon billets were a major quality problem which necessitated surface grinding by machine grinder. This extensive grinding was a major constraint for achieving high production levels of high carbon grades at NTS, Tata Steel Thailand. After analyzing process parameters, it was found that interaction of liquid steel with atmosphere during the casting process was the major cause. After the implementation of the counter measures, the number of pinholes per billet reduced to less than 12 pinholes/billet. This reduced the need for extensive billet grinding and helped production of high carbon billets to increase significantly. The paper describes the problem of high pinholes in high carbon billets and the various countermeasures that helped to mitigate the problem of pinholes.
