Cemented carbide (Hard metal) is a high hardness composite material and has also good compressive strength compared to conventional iron based metals. So it has been utilized as the industrial materials in various fields, such as metal cutting tools and other super-abrasive materials. Cemented carbide materials are composed of hard phase (tungsten carbide) and binder (cobalt and nickel) metal. Hard phase tungsten carbide contributes to wear resistance due to its uniquely high hardness and good compressive strength, while binder phase does to fracture toughness (resistance). Therefore the chemical compositions and manufacturing process of hard metal material are very important, and the performance of final product is decided by these factors. Also thanks to their excellent physical properties, cemented carbide materials have excellent performance when they are used for hot rolling application in the steel industry. The performance of carbide rolls can be mainly controlled by the chemical compositions. We herein investigated the effect of various factors, especially like hard phase (WC contents, size) and binder phase (Co, Ni, Cr), and also studied on the effect of thermal and chemical properties of hard metal on the performance of carbide roll.
